FabFilter Pro-Q 3
Pro-Q 3 is a state-of-the-art equalizer with all the tools to take command of the frequency spectrum. It delivers pristine sound quality, and exceptional ease of use.
The headline addition is dynamic EQ, which lets each band be set to compress or expand based on an automatic threshold setting. This responds to one of today’s plugin trends, and makes Pro-Q 3 more competitive with Tokyo Dawn’s Nova GE and iZotope’s Neutron.
Flat Tilt Filter Shape
The latest version of FabFilter Pro-Q brings some really advanced features and functions to an already top-notch equalizer. Eli covers the most important ones including a piano keyboard display for quickly quantizing frequencies, Spectrum Analyzer and Grab, EQ Match, Mid/Side Processing, new Tilt and Band Pass shapes as well as an optional linear phase mode.
The most exciting addition to the multitude of filter types is the flat tilt shape which allows you to essentially shift the frequency balance one way or the other. This can be very useful for taming problem resonances after the major EQ work is done.
Other improvements include the ability to choose between a linear or brickwall slope for all filter shapes. This is particularly useful for those instances when the super-steep 96dB/octave roll-off slope of the standard low cut, high shelf and notch filters isn’t quite precise enough. You can also now process individual bands in Mid/Side or Left/Right mode.
Dolby Atmos Support
Dolby Atmos is a big deal for cinema these days, with loads of new films produced in the format. And while Atmos requires a compatible AV receiver with Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization (the speaker package has two to seven listener-level channels that create the illusion of overhead sound via speakers), it’s becoming more common to find Dolby Atmos soundtracks on streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify, as well as in headphones.
FabFilter Pro-Q has long been a go-to workhorse equalizer for many engineers, thanks to its pristine sound quality, comprehensive feature set and gorgeous interface that’s designed to help you get ‘that sound’ fast. With pro q-3, we’ve taken it to the next level by adding dynamic EQ, immersive surround/immersive audio support up to Dolby Atmos 9.1.6 and per-band mid/side processing — all with the same incredibly fast workflow. Other improvements include a new Brickwall LP/HP filter slope, improved Spectrum Grab and Frequency Collision indication.
Piano Roll View
The piano roll view allows you to snap a frequency in the band window to a note value on a keyboard. This will help you to choose frequencies based on their musical notes values and make more musical EQ choices that will add energy and excitement to your mixes.
Other features include a Spectrum Grab function that can pinpoint critical peaks, zero latency for recording or tracking, Natural phase processing for transparent operation and Linear Phase for analog sound quality, intelligent band solo mode, external side-chain support, a gorgeous resizable interface with full screen mode and GPU powered graphics acceleration, 9 filter types, EQ Match, and much more!
The EQ Match function is a feature that will allow you to pair 2 separate frequency spectrums in 1 Pro Q 3 plugin. You can then use it to apply reduction only when the external side-chain is active – effectively functioning as a de-esser. This is very useful when layering multiple instruments.
External Spectrum Visualization
The EQ analyzer is now fully resizable, with new labelling for the most important peaks and easy access to the band menu. There are also improved EQ parameter value display options, including bypass, shape and delete. And a new’show collisions’ option for the main analyzer, highlighting areas of the spectrum where frequencies from different sources might collide and cause auditory masking.
Dialog editors often have to deal with unsalvageable lines from actors whose performances were recorded on set, so being able to visually check for potentially clashing frequencies is really useful. Especially in surround sessions, where the interactions between all elements must be balanced to produce a coherent soundtrack. With its ultra-transparent Linear Phase mode and Natural Phase mode, pro q-3 provides the perfect tools for this task. It’s also a fantastic choice for mastering due to its outstanding performance and gorgeous interface. With its unrivalled combination of 24 bands, perfect analog modeling and innovative features like Spectrum Grab and collision detection, it is a top-quality EQ plug-in that can truly compete with the best analog hardware.
